Waste Not Want Not—Part One

In honor of the “Go Further with Food” theme, we will be talking about how to get the most out of the foods you eat and/or buy. In part one of this two part series, I am going to show you ways to save money and cook with the foods that you would normally throw in the trash.

Trash

American families in today’s society waste millions of dollars worth of food annually. That is a lot of money and a lot of food!

One way to avoid waste is by shopping for your lifestyle. This means that you buy foods that you are actually going to be able to eat. For example, if your job requires you to be on the road most of the time, you may not want to buy yogurt, cheese, or a frozen dinner to pack for lunch. A better option would be a granola bar, piece of fruit, or sandwich – something that won’t go bad if it is in your lunch bag in the car. This would also be great for those of you who don’t typically get a lunch break or don’t have a lunch area where you can heat up leftovers. Most times, when you pack a lunch, it is healthier and more nutritionally sound than stopping by a restaurant to eat. It is also less costly.

The next time you go shopping, look for some foods you can purchase that will help you create new healthy eating habits. As always, email me if you need any help!

See you next week!
