Go Further With Food

This week I am going to showcase foods that are serve multiple purposes. Either these foods contain different nutrients or are full of ingredients that are truly beneficial to life. You may hear them referred to as “Super Foods”. Here is a list of my favorite foods that give you more bang for your buck:

  • Beans: We’ve got to learn to love the bean. They are a protein and a vegetable. Beans are loaded with fiber and we know the benefits of fiber.
  • Berries: Although they don’t always taste the best, berries are one of the best pieces of fruit to eat. They contain anti-oxidants and have a lot of fiber. Try adding them in yogurt or smoothies if you are not a fan of their taste.

Blueberries

  • Steel-cut Oats: If you’ve never had them, it takes some adjusting to. Steel-cut oat are high in protein and fiber. You can fruit for flavoring.
  • Greek Yogurt: A great balance of protein, calcium, and carbohydrates. Greek yogurt is a little thicker in texture than the other kinds, but it is a better option. Try to go for the plain or vanilla flavored and add your own fruit. This will drastically cut the sugar content.
  • Nuts: These can be added to a multitude of foods whether hot or cold. Nuts are a great source of protein and healthy fat. This is an excellent choice if you are looking for a healthy snack. You can eat them whole, crushed, or ground.
  • Seeds: Like nuts, these can be added to various foods. People are not typically allergic to seeds like they are to nuts. Seeds are another healthy way to get healthy fats and some are a good source of protein.

Chia Seeds

  • Fish: Another great source of healthy fat and protein. Eating (non-fried) fish once a week is a good start if you are trying to eat healthier.
