The holiday season is upon us and one of the most family-oriented holidays is right around the corner – Thanksgiving! With all of the hustle and bustle, it is almost imperative that you remember to take mindful moments and clear some mental space. Remember, unnecessary stress is not good for your health. In addition to clearing your mind, it is also important that you remember to honor your body and use some mindful eating strategies on Turkey Day. Here are some tips:
- DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE BIG DINNER TO EAT! Saving yourself so that you can eat more food is a myth. Eating a breakfast meal or small snack will not prevent you from being ready for food at dinner time.
- Browse the available food options before making a selection. See what looks appealing to you.
- Help yourself to a SMALL PORTION of everything that you would like to taste. Even if you prepared the dish or you know that it will be amazing, just take a small sample.
- Taste a bite or two of everything on your plate to see if it meets your expectations. If you don’t like it, leave it on your plate. Do not feel obligated to eat the food – that’s why you only have a small sample.
- Once you have tried everything, allow yourself to go back for seconds, but only get more of what you liked in the first round.
- Go ahead and treat dessert the same as you did dinner. Browsing, sampling, and allowing seconds if you desire.

Don’t get upset if you overeat or get overstuffed. Enjoy the fact that you enjoyed your meal and made mindful decisions and choices on this day. Once Thanksgiving is over, go back to your healthy eating routine. You do not want to eat a Thanksgiving dinner-like meal every day. That is what causes weight gain, not this one day of eating. In my 90-day program, I teach you how to eat mindfully on a regular basis, and I show you how to honor your body and eat for your desired health.
